Today, yeah.
Jun. 2nd, 2004 09:15 pmToday everything sort of hit home. Life has been moderately insane for about a month, and the last week and a half has been the most routine I’ve had. (And in case anyone out there DOESN’T know, spontanaeity and I aren’t exactly kissing cousins. I should have a heart tattoed on my arm saying “Long Term Planner” – only then I’d have to spend three weeks researching the best tattoo parlor in Brussels.) And while the people at work are, for real, great, it’s still stressful worrying about living up to snuff. Plus it was rainy, and I managed to dye a load of laundry pink (I don’t know how, but I’m working on it. Is there a solution for a white shirt now tinged pink that doesn’t involve another trip to H&M?). So this afternoon was grumpy, a la spoiled brat needing a kick in the butt.
Fortunately for all concerned (and most immediately, for Marla), I live in Brussels (wahoo!) and it seems that an excellent cure for grumpy can be easily had. It includes moules avec beurre et ail (aka, moules a la escargot, but without any escargot being involved), a glass of red wine, and a dish of French fries. Yeah, and my first Belgian waffle. A very Belgian evening, all in all. Thank god we go to the gym after work.
(On a side note, to get to the mussels place, we wandered through a whole slew of neon lit alleyways full of restaurant – Jess, I wish you were here to take the interesting photos – mine just look silly. It probably means I am not as cosmopolitan as I should be, but I LIKE Brussels. It’s comfortable.)
As it stands, my next life skill to be mastered is finding a Brussels movie theater that’s showing Harry Potter in English. Because the fact that it opened two days earlier here than at home does me no good if the only words I understand are Wingardium Leviosa. (And yes, I still want to be Hermione Granger when I grow up.)
Meanwhile, could all y’all in Texas assure me that you were not eaten by the scary red blip on the weather map that purports to be a supercell thunderstorm? (Or purported, as CNN seems to be a little behind on the whole late-breaking-weather-news-thing.)
In other news, it’s almost D-Day + 60, and the news over here is focusing on it a great deal. Which is interesting, especially since Germany’s participating for the first time. I just watched a special on some of the survivors of the initial Normandy invasion, and I don’t really think that I have the capacity to imagine. For one of the interviewees, it was the first time he’d talked about it to anyone. I remember, before leaving for Copenhagen I think, but maybe not, sitting at Shannon’s in Ellicott City listening to Opa talk about what Normandy +4 was like. And while I’m sure it was highly edited, I’m glad that I got to hear it from him.

Date: 2004-06-03 10:19 am (UTC)I won't have any problems finding HP in English. My problem is waiting. The super extra-early sneak preview isn't until the 19th. Regular release isn't until the end of June. ;_; Meanie heads. Making me wait. Not fair. I suppose I could always just reread the book in the meantime. Perhaps after my adventure to Immigration (and oh how I love those adventures), it will be a good time to hunt down a library in my new ward. That also can be taken the wrong way. <_< Shoulda just left it in scribble language. f^_^;

Date: 2004-06-03 03:39 pm (UTC)I am very close to keeling over...and napping. What a long and nutty 2 days. Actually, its just the last 20 hours that were crazy, it just seems longer. I alreayd told you about the cake excitement...and then within moments of that excitement, found out that Shannon from work's (you sat with her at the wedding) brother died in a car accident...A MONTH AGO. Everybody assumed somebody else told me, so it ended up that nobody actually told me. And I thought she was mad at me cause she had asked me to make a cake and told me the wrong day, and when she told me the right day it was during finals so I told her I couldnt do it...turns out she wasnt calling me cause she was in a deep depressing. GAH. Anyway, she seems to be doing better now...but it was like a super high and then a super low...and then I was supposed to go to sleep..YEAH RIGHT. That didnt go well at all.
Now I'm sitting in the library. This crazy woman just brought like 10 platic bags in, in shifts. And now she has headphones on, is apparently studying, and everynow and then she talks to herself...in a language that sounds somewhat African in nature. I dunno. Very weird.
ok to class with me. Hoepfully Greg is feeling feisty cause I'm gonna need something to keep me awake!!
